Understanding Color

Producing color means mastering different languages. People often wonder why a color seen on a screen looks different on a wall or a piece of metal. The answer lies in the different "coding systems".

RGB

Red, Green, Blue

The language of light and screens.
RGB is an additive system: it works by adding three light beams. When added at maximum intensity, they create white.

Where it's used: Monitors, smartphones, TVs, websites
Limit: You cannot "print" light. Very bright colors will lose vibrancy when printed.

CMYK

Ciano, Magenta, Yellow, Key (Nero)

The language of traditional printing.
A subtractive system: color is achieved by overlapping physical inks on a white background.

Where it's used: Catalogs, brochures, magazines, digital printing
Limit: Narrower color gamut than RGB. Very saturated shades are difficult to obtain.

PANTONE®

Pantone Matching System

The language of identity and precision.
It doesn't use dot overlapping, but "recipes" of pre-mixed inks.

Advantage: Guarantees that the color is identical all over the world.
Where it's used: Corporate logos, luxury packaging, industrial design

At Saber, we use Pantone references to calibrate special tints with high fidelity.

RAL

Standard Europeo Industriale

The language of industry and architecture.
The European standard for paints and coatings.

Advantage: Robust and universal system.
Where it's used: Windows/doors, gates, metal structures, machinery, powder coating

NCS®

Natural Colour System

The language of human perception.
It's not based on chemistry or light, but on how the human eye perceives color.

Example: S 1050-Y90R means 10% darkness, 50% saturation, Yellow hue with 90% Red.
Where it's used: Interior design, facade architecture, chromatic design

Application

The Right Choice

Choosing the right product depends on the surface, the environment and the desired result.

Water-based vs Enamels

While water-based paints are designed to let walls "breathe", enamels (water- or solvent-based) create a protective film resistant to impacts, scratches, and weathering.

  • Breathable:

    Ideal for ceilings and bedrooms.

  • Washable:

    Great for hallways and kitchens.

  • Enamel:

Essential for iron, wood and walls requiring maximum hygiene.

Technical Performance

Matte

Hides wall imperfections. Zero reflections. Deep, velvety look.

Satin

The ideal compromise. Slight sheen, very easy to clean.

Gloss

Maximum reflectance. More vivid and brilliant colors. Extremely washable.

Product Selection Guide

Dry Interiors

Breathable or washable matte paints.

Bathrooms & Kitchens

Anti-mold paints or water-based satin enamels.

Wood & Metal

Solvent-based enamel (exterior) or water-based (interior).

External Facades

Quartz or siloxane paints for maximum durability.
